The case of the Colston 4 in 2022 divided opinions and attracted high levels of public interest and debate. The four defendants had been put on trial on a charge of criminal damage for throwing the statue of former slave-trader Edward Colston into the harbourside at Bristol, but were acquitted by a jury trial. This has led to much discussion, and further court cases, as to whether taking part in a protest or trying to prevent other arguably worse harms in society can provide a defence to a charge of criminal damage.

In this talk, students will be introduced to some of the key legal and criminological issues raised by this case. We will consider both the law, but also criminological approaches to understanding the defences raised by the defendants, thus giving students an opportunity to consider the benefits of two different disciplinary approaches to analysing the same case study. Students will have an opportunity to consider the legal and criminological defences to the charge of criminal damage in this case, and ultimately to decide for themselves whether they agree with the decision of the jury.

Lecturer Profile (Please Click): Dr Charmian Werren is a Lecturer in Criminology in the School of Law at the University of East Anglia. She teaches Criminology and Constitutional Law.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.

As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.

Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 (and equivalent) Law and Criminology students, or those with a potential interest in studying either Law or Criminology (or both). Teachers and members of school staff, as always, are welcome too, particularly where you are joining as a group along with your students.

Preparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider the topic in advance and questions they have. Students can also think about questions about studying Law/Criminology at university level.

The IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans (similar to Zoom) and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event.

Booking a Place: This is free for schools and colleges. If you would like to take part in this event, please register your interest using the link to the registration form below:
