DESCRIPTION:Register here \n  \n \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nLancaster University: Dr Vilius Franckevicius\, Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry\, presents Organic Synthesis and Catalysis in Drug Discovery. Did you know that the vast majority of medicines you buy in a pharmacy in tablet form are organic molecules? Have you ever wondered how these organic molecules are designed\, discovered and made? This talk will give you a flavour of what makes a good drug\, where contemporary medicines come from\, and the integral role that organic chemistry plays in the discovery\, development and production of modern pharmaceuticals.\n\n  \n\nUniversity of East Anglia: Dr Amit Sachdeva\, Associate Professor in Bio-Organic Chemistry\, presents From Light-Sensitive Molecules to Precision Cancer Therapies. In this talk\, I will discuss my laboratory’s journey towards the development of photoactive antibodies for targeted cancer treatment. Organic chemists have created unique light-sensitive molecules that absorb light and undergo chemical reactions. We are harnessing these molecules to engineer proteins that remain inactive until exposed to light\, allowing them to bind selectively to cancer cells only when and where they are needed. By combining concepts from organic chemistry\, chemical biology\, and medicine\, this research aims to create highly targeted cancer therapies that minimise damage to healthy tissues and reduce the side effects often associated with conventional treatments.\n\n  \n  \nIn this insight4me Chemistry online event for schools and colleges\, University of East Anglia and Lancaster University will each have roughly 30 minutes to deliver a punchy\, interactive topic based ‘micro’ talk. Within an overall session theme of Organic Chemistry: Applications in Drug Discovery & Cancer Therapies\, the universities have the freedom to choose their own focus and use the time to convey the key points of the case studies for the students. \ninsight4me is a series of subject specific webinars for Aged 16+ pre-university students. The sessions directly support students’ current studies by giving an insight into particular curriculum areas whilst affording an understanding of how these subjects continue beyond A-levels\, T-levels\, IB\, BTEC and equivalent qualifications\, and how they vary between universities. \n  \n\nOur events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals\, either from school or from home. There is no charge to take part. \nAs a live\, participative event\, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event\, where available. \n  \nSuitable for: Aged 16+ pre-university students studying\, or with a possible interest in studying\, Chemistry and related disciplines. Student groups\, and individual students and teachers are very welcome to join us. \nPreparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider the 2 topics and discuss some of the key elements in advance. Students can also think about questions they have about studying at university level. \nThe IT Setup: The event will be run on Zoom and participants will be able to join using laptops\, tablets\, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group\, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting onto a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via typed comments and questions or via a microphone if preferred.
