Inside the Operating Theatre: Before, During and After Surgery – Ensuring Compassionate, Safe and Dignified Treatment and Care with Kris Birney and Christina Doyle from Canterbury Christ Church University/ODP Surge
May 6 @ 16:30 - 17:15
Join Kris Birney, Course Director & Senior Lecturer in Operating Department Practice and Christina Doyle, Operating Department Practitioner from the ODP SURGE project team, exploring the various roles of the Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) in an interactive session. They will take you through how care is provided to a fictitious patient during their time in the operating theatre (the perioperative period): highlighting the skills and knowledge needed for this to be undertaken.
The scenario used will identify key decision points and interventions as our patient undergoes during a surgical procedure for a hip fracture: helping to demonstrate the complexity of perioperative environment and the characteristics of the ODP role where it is necessary to combine clinical & technical knowledge application, situational awareness and team working to ensure compassionate and dignified care of patients at a time of real vulnerability.
Towards the end of the session, more details will be shared about career entry and the practicalities of the working life of an Operating Department Practitioner: with plenty of opportunity to ask questions.
This will be a live, participative event, and WILL be recorded. The recording will be posted within a future ODP SURGE project website along with the other resources that will be made available after the event.
