History: The English Civil War with Professor Michael Braddick from The University of Sheffield
13th July 2016 @ 11:15 - 12:15
Fighting the English civil war required a very high level of mobilisation: the combined size of the armies was equivalent to the combined populations of the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th largest cities in the country, taxation increased by a factor of 20 in some places, a higher percentage of the population died than in the first world war and perhaps 20% of the country’s urban property was destroyed.
How were ordinary people caught up in this? The lecture explores the evidence for this, concentrating on the propaganda efforts in the years around the outbreak of the war in 1642. At the end of the lecture students will have a clear sense of the issues being publicly debated in 1642, how they were presented to ordinary people, and the evidence we have for trying to understand how ordinary people engaged with this crisis.
Suitable for: Year 12 students.
Lecturer Profile: Professor Michael Braddick
Preparation/Pre-Reading: None is required although students may wish to consider and discuss some of the issues prior to the event.
