History: Fascism(s) – Comparing The Italian & German Experiences With Dr Matthew D’Auria From University of East Anglia
24th September 2024 @ 13:30 - 14:15
In this History session, Dr Matthew D’Auria, Associate Professor in Modern European History in the School of History at University of East Anglia, will run an interactive talk for students on Fascism(s): Comparing the Italian and German Experiences.
The aim of this session is to explore the nature of fascism by comparing the experiences of Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. After establishing how these two regimes differed from others, such as Franco’s Spain or Horthy’s Hungary, the session will identify differences and similarities between them.
Particular attention will be paid to the distinctive contexts of these anti-liberal and authoritarian regimes, including the role of race and the state’s position within their ideologies, the nature of support they garnered, and how they functioned in practice.
We will also examine how bureaucracy, the possibility of dissent, and the use of violence played a central role in both regimes and how these elements shaped their development and societal impact.
