SUMMARY:History: 'International' Collaboration in the Middle Ages: The Lisbon Crusade with Dr Charles West from The University of Sheffield
DESCRIPTION: \nDr Charles West’s lecture will be about the Lisbon Crusade of 1147\, when hundreds of boats gathered in Dartmouth and set off to conquer the city of Lisbon\, at the time under Muslim control. It’s about how people in the Middle Ages organised themselves across national boundaries\, and how the period wasn’t always as hierarchical as we sometimes think in our obsession with kings and queens. \nLearning outcomes include understanding how “ordinary” people could be important in the past\, and how the Middle Ages was a period of “international” collaboration based on trade networks. \nA blog written by Charles on the topic is available here. \nSuitable for: Year 12 students. \nLecturer Profile: Dr Charles West \nPreparation/Pre-Reading: None is required although students may wish to consider and discuss some of the issues prior to the event. \n
