History/EPQ: Detecting Bias in Sources With Dr Danica Summerlin From The University of Sheffield

In this interactive webinar, Dr Danica Summerlin from The Department of History at The University of Sheffield offers a Masterclass to sixth form students which examines ways in which students can evaluate sources and detect bias within them.

Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 with interests in research skills, possibly studying History or an Extended Project Qualification, for example.

Preparation or Pre-Reading: Students will be asked to consider an excerpt from a source in terms of reliability/credibility prior to the session. We also recommend that students consider in advance some questions relevant to their interest Research and the validity and criticism of sources.

The IT Setup: The setup is similar to Skype, using a pc and webcam, although students take part as a group with the image projected on a whiteboard rather than as individuals in front of lots of pcs. We will work with your IT department to ensure everything is set up and working prior to the event. The sessions are generally limited to 3 to 5 schools to maintain the interactive nature of the experience.
