Health & Social Care: Caring Looks Different To Everybody – Exploring My Generational Differences With Leanne Mchugh & Gemma Gazi From Bishop Grosseteste University

13th July 2021 @ 13:30 - 14:30

We will begin by creating a sense of  calm so your mind can be open to the learning ahead using a personal reflection tool. The tool looks at what we are in control of right now, enabling us to put to one side areas that we cannot control.

We will move on to consider an overview of carers, exploring a wide range of definitions of what a carer is. This will help us to consider that there are many different ways a caring role can evolve and presents an opportunity to challenge what we think we know about being a carer. We will also think about how many carers there are, the age ranges, and how this translates globally via an Interactive “Carers Quiz”.

Then, as a group, we will ask ‘Am I a carer?’ to get us to think more broadly around being a carer and how the roles and responsibilities may change, especially during the global pandemic. We are aware there was a rise in carers, but did we recognise and acknowledge them? Why? Why not? What more needs to happen? How have some of our students made this adaption?

As society is changing what will the future carers need? Is society ready to support their needs as they potentially challenge the way carers have been expected to care. This is your opportunity to share, compare and contrast your generational views.

Acknowledging that the subject may be emotive, we will have a light-hearted check out “wellbeing activity” to close.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.

As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.

Suitable for: Year 12 and 13 students (and equivalent) studying, or interested in studying, Health & Social Care, and related subjects. We also welcome interested students from other disciplines.

Preparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider questions they have about the topic and/or about studying this discipline at university.

The IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event.

Booking a Place: This is free for schools and colleges. If you would like to take part in this event, please register your interest using the link to the registration form below:
