Student finance has always had a bearing on post-18 choices including when someone can go to university and which universities are on their short list. With the current high cost of living, student finance is exerting an even greater influence on student choice.

This session is designed for Year 12, Year 13, and mature students, and parents in the UK. It will cover student loans (tuition fees, maintenance loan), scholarships and bursaries, emergency funding, and working whilst studying. We’ll also cover budgeting and share practical tips that enable students to keep to their budget, take advantage of discounts and offers, and get the best value for money.

This session will also touch on topics that go beyond the practical information and advice about student finance. For example, being a student means managing on a limited budget whilst also taking out a very long-term loan to cover the cost of going to university. Whilst a degree can bring the future benefits of a more rewarding career and a higher salary, how do students reconcile this decision now? No one wants to be the person in the group, who has to say that they can’t afford to go out. How do students navigate these situations and conversations?

In advance of this session, all participants will need to watch a short presentation that introduces some of the terminology, topics and issues that will be discussed. This is available below:

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.

As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.

Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) who have applied, or are considering applying, to study at university along with parents, mature students and HE advisers. This is primarily aimed at UK students.

Preparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider questions they have about student finance and scholarships.

The IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans (similar to Zoom) and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event.

Booking a Place: This is free for schools and colleges. If you would like to take part in this event, please register your interest using the link to the registration form below:
