HE Guidance: Researching Universities – Digital Skills To Avoid An Online Overload With Elizabeth McCullough From Goldsmiths, University of London

10th June 2021 @ 12:45 - 13:45

Researching courses and universities online can feel overwhelming.

There are so many websites, online chats, pdf downloads, and digital events that it’s difficult to know which ones to sign up for. Then there are the online event platforms – MS Teams, Zoom, Gotowebinar, and Google Meet. How does each one work both on your laptop and on your mobile phone? Why does your dad’s name appear when you log-in for a Zoom event and how can you change it? And let’s not forget all the emails that flood your inbox and make it so easy to lose the message with the log-in link to the digital event that started five minutes ago.

In this session, we calmly walk through the tools that will help you navigate the online environment, select the information and events that are most relevant to you, and manage the communications you receive.

Elizabeth McCullough is UK Student Recruitment Manager at Goldsmiths, University of London.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.

As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.

Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent). Teachers and advisers are welcome too.

Preparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider questions they have about managing their online activity with respect to researching universities and courses.

The IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event.

Booking a Place: This is free for schools and colleges. If you would like to take part in this event, please register your interest using the link to the registration form below:
