Graphic Design/Illustration: Album Cover Design Masterclass/Workshop with Brian Reed From Solent University

On 14 October, we are joined by Brian Reed, course leader of both BA Illustration and BA Graphic Design at Solent University.

In this masterclass/workshop, Brian, who brings 25 years of experience as a designer, artist and teacher, will begin by exploring the history of record cover design, an industry with a global audience and wide appeal, that is also demanding with tight deadlines and concepts. The industry employs are wide range of creative disciplines that are reliant and supportive of each other.

Brian will then lead a record design workshop in which participants are set a brief and guided through the process of an Album Cover Image Sprint. As part of this quickfire creative activity, students will have the opportunity to share their work and gain feedback from Brian in Solent’s collaborative and supportive online studio.

Participants will gain an insight into what makes a great and iconic record cover as well as an understanding of the distinction between Graphic Design and Illustration.

We will close with a Q&A to discuss the workshop more generally and explore how you can develop your skills and potential further at university.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of school closures.

As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.

 

 

Suitable for: Year 12 & Year 13 students studying, or with a potential interest in studying, Graphic Design or Illustration at university.

Preparation/Pre-Reading: There is no pre-reading required but students will need to have A4 paper and pen/pencil available to them during the session. Students may also like to consider questions they have about studying Graphic Design and/or Illustration at university.

The IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event.
