Geology/Environmental Science: How Does Geology Influence Ecology & Biodiversity? With Dr John MacDonald From University of Glasgow
March 4 @ 11:10 - 11:55
In this Geology/Environmental Science session, Dr John MacDonald, Senior Lecturer in Anthropogenic Geomaterials in the School of Geographical & Earth Sciences at University of Glasgow, will run an interactive talk for students on How does geology influence ecology and biodiversity?
Have you ever wondered why different plants grow in different places? Or why some birds only nest on the ground in specific areas? A lot of this is due to geology. Geology has a major influence on ecology and biodiversity.
In this session we’ll discuss how different types of rocks with different chemical and physical properties create different ecological habitats. There are lots of different types of rocks, and so the Earth’s varied geology is what underpins biodiversity. As well as natural rocks, we’ll also discuss some exciting new research from students at the University Of Glasgow which shows how human activity is creating new types of rocks, and the opportunities and challenges this poses for wildlife.
