Geography/Sciences: Water and Ice On Mars With Dr Frances Butcher From The University Of Sheffield
11th February 2021 @ 11:15 - 12:15
In the present day, Mars hosts abundant water ice within stunning glaciers and ice caps.
In this talk, we will go on a visual tour of Mars’ icy landscapes using the latest high-resolution image and 3D data returned from orbiting satellites.
We will explore the recent history of glaciation and glacial meltwater on Mars, what Mars can teach us about glaciation on our own planet, and how glaciers on Mars could provide vital water resources for future human missions to the Red Planet.
Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.
As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.
Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) studying, or with a possible interest in studying, Geography, Sciences and related disciplines.
Preparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider questions they have about glaciation and water on Mars and their significance in terms of the understanding we can gain and how we might benefit.
The IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard.
