In this Geography session, Dr Lazaros Karaliotas, Senior Lecturer in the School of Geographical & Earth Sciences at University of Glasgow, will run an interactive talk for students on the Place Making Process entitled Who Makes a Place?

How does a city emerge? Planners draw up plans, architects design buildings, councils regulate land use. But cities are much more than planning and design. This raises a broader question: who actually makes a place?

Using examples from everyday urban life, the session explores how places are shaped by many different actors – from councils and developers to workers across the city’s infrastructures and services, local businesses, communities and the people who live the city every day. Through their work, investments, decisions and everyday activities these actors help bring the city into being and keep it running. At the same time, different groups often develop very different ideas about what a “good” place should be, and cities emerge from the tensions and negotiations between these competing visions – including questions of whose city is being made, and at whose expense.

This interactive session introduces this perspective and invites you to reflect on what an “ideal city” might look like from different viewpoints.

The full context/introduction to this live and interactive discussion is provided in the Headliner recorded video below. This recording can be watched as a class activity or independently in preparation for the session.
