Geography/Environmental Sciences: The UEA Natural Hazards Series – Earthquakes – Why? How? Where? When? With Dr Jess Johnson From University of East Anglia
17th May 2023 @ 12:45 - 13:30
As part of UEA’s Natural Hazards Series, we are joined by Dr Jess Johnson, Associate Professor in Solid Earth Geophysics in the School of Environmental Sciences, who presents ‘Earthquakes – Why? How? Where? When?’
Earthquakes are unpredictable and potentially devastating. I will take you on a whistle-stop tour of the state-of-the-art of seismology research. We will explore why and where earthquakes happen, delve into how faults rupture and seismic waves are produced, and investigate methods for forecasting events.
We will encounter some recent and historic examples including the February Magnitude 7.8 Turkey-Syria event that killed at least 58,000 people, and examine why some earthquakes are deadlier than others.
Finally, we will discover that learning about earthquakes helps us to mitigate risks associated with these amazing natural phenomena.
