In this Film Studies session, Keith M Johnston, Professor of Film & Television Studies in the School of Art, Media and American Studies at University of East Anglia, will run an interactive talk for students on British Film – Social Realism.

Since the 1930s, British cinema has been hailed for its ‘social realist’ approach to cinema with a series of films, film movements, and directors that are regularly discussed in relation to that term. But what exactly is a ‘social realist’ film? And why has Britain’s film industry returned to it time and time again?

From creative documentaries on housing problems to fictional narratives about other social ‘problems’, via angry young men (and women) and films that set out to change government policy, this session will explore how social realism developed in specific historical moments and in relation to particular social issues. It will look at key figures and films from different time periods and encourage you to consider what a social realist British film should look like in the year 2022

The session will develop thinking, skills and approaches to support students in their Film Studies studies and future aspirations.

Lecturer Profile (Please Click): Professor Keith M Johnston is an expert on comedy, science fiction, horror, and social realism within British Cinema history.
