Extended Project Qualification: Getting Started With The Extended Project Qualification With Katrina Lueddeke From University of Southampton
20th September 2023 @ 14:00 - 14:45
This session will be delivered by Katrina Lueddeke, the Academic Skills Manager for the Learn with US Transition programme at the University of Southampton.
The aim of this session is to increase students’ understanding of the Extended Project Qualification. Though the session is directed at students studying the EPQ, teachers are also very welcome to join individually or with their groups.
The session will:
- Outline the requirements and benefits of studying the EPQ (including how the EPQ supports teaching and learning in higher education).
- Explore and apply techniques for identifying a project idea that is well-informed, focussed and based on a strong rationale which offers extensive scope for project development.
- Outline the importance of identifying clear, realistic and appropriate aims and objectives which can be embedded throughout project implementation.
Preparatory Work
Though it is not essential to complete the preparatory work before the session, you might find the session even more useful if you have carried out the following 3 tasks:
Task 1: List at least 3 key interests of yours. These interests can be anything from hobbies, subjects you study (or want to study in the future) to current issues.
Task 2: For each of your key interests, write a brief sentence elaborating on WHY this interests you (avoid just saying ‘I find it interesting’ – explain why?!)
Extension: Begin researching your key interests by using key terms in search engines. It may even be relevant and useful to research your interests in recent news. You could also look out for relevant podcasts and YouTube videos. In other words, get enthused! You can research almost anything for your EPQ (as long as it doesn’t overlap with your other subject content), so pick something you find interesting and exciting. This will keep you motivated throughout the project!
Task 3: Read this EPQ information (about a 1-minute read) about what the EPQ is, what the EPQ involves, how the EPQ is graded and its benefits.
Please note that, although the session is scheduled to end at 14:45, Katrina will stay on until 15:00 to answer further questions about the session and about the EPQ, more generally.
