SUMMARY:Extended Project Qualification: EPQ Step 1 - From finding your project inspiration to starting your research with Elizabeth Farnhill from The University of Sheffield
DESCRIPTION: \n\nThis interactive session will give you an introduction to what the Extended Qualification Project (EPQ) is and why universities are increasingly encouraging applicants to take this research-based qualification. \nWe will provide suggestions about how to channel the inspiration for your project into a working title and how to devise search criteria to find credible\, academic sources for your project. We’ll also cover project management so that you can set achievable milestones and deadlines that suit your learning style and preferences. \nAt the end of the session there’ll be a question and answer session with a current student\, who has had experience of research both at school and University level. \n  \n\nSession Leader: Elizabeth Farnhill \nSuitable for: This lecture would be appropriate for any Year 12/13 student(s) studying or interested in undertaking the Extended Qualification Project\, who is currently at the beginning or the early stages of the EPQ. \nPreparation/Pre-Reading: The University of Sheffield will provide the school co-ordinator with a number of handouts that will be used as part of the session. We would ask that the handout titled The ‘project planning activity’ be completed by participants prior to the session. This activity takes no longer than 10 minutes and can be set as homework. The remaining hand-outs do not need to be read in advance of the session but please ensure that each pupil has access to one copy of each handout. \nThe IT Setup: The setup is similar to Skype\, using a pc and webcam\, although students take part as a group with the image projected on a whiteboard rather than as individuals in front of lots of pcs. Dedicated videoconferencing equipment is also compatible if available to the school. We will work with your IT department to ensure everything is set up and working prior to the event. The sessions are generally limited to 3 or 4 schools to maintain the interactive nature of the experience. \nBooking a Place: If you have a group of students that you would like to take part in this event\, please contact us via email or via the contact form at the top right of this webpage (or at the bottom if you are on a mobile device). Subject to availability\, we will book a place for you. \n
