Extended Project Qualification: Crafting A Question With Katrina Lueddeke From University of Southampton
11th October 2023 @ 14:00 - 14:45
The second session in our series, this webinar will be delivered by Katrina Lueddeke, the Academic Skills Manager for the Learn with US Transition programme at the University of Southampton.
The aim of this session is to assist students in the development of their research questions/project titles to ensure they are well-defined, clearly focussed and offer extensive scope for project development.
Though the session is directed at students studying the EPQ, teachers are also very welcome to join individually or with their groups.
This session will:
- Explain the importance of developing a suitable research question.
- Demonstrate strategies for creating a research question.
- Explore how to reflect on the development of a research question (helpful for production logs!)
Preparatory Work
Though it is not essential to complete the preparatory work before the session, you might find the session even more useful if you have carried out the following task/s:
- Watch the University of Southampton’s video on ‘why and how to start an EPQ’ (the ‘narrowing down your question’ part starts at 13:07). After watching the video, write down at least 3 pieces of advice would you tell someone who is narrowing down their research question for their EPQ.
- Extension Task: Find 3 credible articles/pieces of research (you could use Google Scholar for this) for your chosen topic (if you have yet to decide on a topic, choose something you are interested in for now – you don’t have to stick with this topic).
- What do you notice about the structure of these 3 articles?
- Are there any similarities/differences in the structure of them?
Please note that, although the session is scheduled to end at 14:45, Katrina will stay on until 15:00 to answer further questions about the session and about the EPQ, more generally.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.
As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.
Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) studying for an Extended Project Qualification. Individual students and teachers as well as groups taking part from a classroom are very welcome indeed.
Preparation/Pre-Reading: See above.
