Extended Project Qualification: A Skills & Insight University Workshop – The Artefact Report: Documenting Your Journey With Dr Rebecca Westrup From University of East Anglia

In this session, Dr Rebecca Westrup from the University of East Anglia will lead a skills workshop for students who are creating an artefact for their EPQ.

The session will focus on sharing insights to enable the writing of the report to accompany the artefact and help students to:

  • Use research to underpin the aims and objectives of their artefact;
  • Critically evaluate sources;
  • Evaluate the artefact and reflect on the process.

In preparation for the session Rebecca asks students to spend 10 minutes reflecting on the progress they have made with their project so far. Please see further details below.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.

As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.


Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) carrying out, or planning to carry out, an EPQ. Teachers and members of school staff, as always, are welcome too and participants can join as individuals from school/college or home, or as a group from school/college.

Preparation/Pre-Reading: Reflecting on your EPQ journey so far – Please see this message from Rebecca:

I’m looking forward to working with you as you continue your EPQ journey on 21st January. In preparation for the session please spend 10 minutes (or longer if you wish to) reflecting on the progress you have made with your project so far. Some questions you may wish to guide your reflections are:

    • What stage are you working on at the moment? E.g. Planning and developing a rationale, undertaking primary and/ or secondary research, evaluating your artefact, writing up?
    • What skills have you learnt about and can demonstrate through the planning, designing and evaluation of your artefact? (If you’re at the planning/ designing stage, what skills do you envisage you’ll be able to demonstrate?)

The IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event.
