Environmental Science: Understanding Climate Tipping Points & How They Interact With Dr Katie Jenkins From University of East Anglia
14th May 2024 @ 09:10 - 09:55
In this Environmental Science session, Dr Katie Jenkins, Tyndall Centre Research Lecturer in the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at University of East Anglia, will run an interactive talk for students on Understanding Climate Tipping Points & How they Interact.
A climate tipping point is a critical threshold in the climate system, which when exceeded can lead to a dramatic, and often irreversible, change in the system. Our planet has already warmed by an average of 1.1°C compared to that seen in the pre-industrial period (1850-1900), driven by human activities. This session will introduce the link between current and future projections of climate change and potential tipping points including the loss of arctic sea ice, the melting of the Greenland ice sheet, thawing of permafrost and changes in ocean circulation. We will explore evidence that change is underway, the consequences of reaching these tipping points, and the ways in which different tipping-points can interact with each other and other systems.
The session will develop knowledge and critical thinking skills to support students in their environmental science studies and future aspirations.
Lecturer Profile: Dr Katie Jenkins
Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.
As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.
Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) studying, or with a possible interest in studying, Environmental Science, Geography and related disciplines. Student groups as well as students and teachers joining individually are very welcome.
Preparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider the topic in advance and questions they have. Students can also think about questions about studying at university level.
The IT Setup: The event will be run on Zoom and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event.
