English: ‘To Tweet, or not to Tweet?’ Exploring Shakespeare’s Plays As Elizabethan Social Networks With Dr Amy Albudri From Bishop Grosseteste University

When speaking about social networks today we immediately think of sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest. Yet the concept of social networks came long before the invention of the Internet; the ‘Great Bard’ himself was a pioneer of literature as a form social networking. Not only did the ‘new media’ of print in sixteenth-century England enable theatres to draw together more diverse communities than ever before, but we also find different metaphors for social media in Shakespeare’s plays. These range from ‘Tweeting’ to ‘trolling’ and highlight how technology and the humanities have historically shared the same objective: to facilitate communication among people.
In this live, participative workshop, students are invited to attend a lecture on Shakespeare as a forerunner of Elizabethan social networking before engaging in tutor led interactive exercises. There will also be an opportunity for Q&A.
The session is led by Renaissance expert Dr Amy Albudri and provides students with the chance to experience an Undergraduate style literary discussion. Students will also be encouraged to consider the role and relevance of historic literature in the twenty-first century; this forms the basis for several of Dr Albudri’s modules at Bishop Grosseteste University and provides a useful insight into what students can expect when embarking on a degree in English.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.
As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.
Suitable for: Year 12 and 13 students (and equivalent) studying, or interested in studying, English and related subjects. We also welcome interested students from other disciplines.
Preparation/Pre-Reading: It is not a requirement that students have read the texts used for example in the session; should they wish to perform optional pre-reading then the recommended plays are Twelfth Night and Hamlet. Students may wish to consider questions they have about the topic and/or about studying this discipline at university.
The IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event.
