English Literature: Skills & Insight – Tackling Poetry Collections With Dr Holly Corfield Carr From University of East Anglia
June 12 @ 11:10 - 11:55
In this English Literature session, Dr Holly Corfield Carr, Lecturer in Creative Writing (Poetry) in the School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing at University of East Anglia, will run an interactive skills and insight workshop for students on Tackling Poetry Collections.
When we read a poem, we might know how to listen to its sounds or measure the rhythms of its lines or talk about its voice. How, then, do we listen or measure or talk about two poems or three poems or even a whole collection of poems at once? How might the voice of one poem speak to the voice of another? We’ll take our examples from William Blake and Emily Dickinson so this session will be particularly useful for those who are studying these poets’ works but, with exercises and discussion led by a poet from the UEA’s Creative Writing team, the aim of the session will be to develop a more creative toolbox of skills to help us understand how one poem might sing in a duet with another and how, when we read any collection of poems, we can listen to the whole chorus.
