English Literature: Exploring Unseen Poetry with Dr Rebecca Bullard from The University of Reading
14th December 2017 @ 14:05 - 15:05
What do we do when we meet a poem for the first time? How can we analyse the effects that a poem has on us even – or especially – when its meaning isn’t clear at first sight?
Presented by Dr Rebecca Bullard, this interactive webinar offers students some techniques for reading unfamiliar poetry. It considers different ways of approaching a text for the first time. It enables students to become more confident readers, so that encountering new poetry becomes both an adventure and a pleasure.
During this session there will also be an opportunity to find out more about:
– studying English literature at university
– how to apply for an English degree (including how to write a good personal statement)
– the kinds of careers that might follow a degree in English
Suitable for: Year 12/13 students studying English Literature/Language AS/A-level – especially those who might be considering an application to study English at University.
Lecturer profile: Dr Rebecca Bullard is an Associate Professor of English Literature at the University of Reading. She has written books on eighteenth-century literature and politics, and enjoys teaching all kinds of literature, from the earliest poetry in English to contemporary fiction.
Preparation or Pre-Reading: None required. Students might like to browse an anthology of poetry such as The Oxford Book of English Verse or The Norton Anthology of Poetry, or websites like https://www.poetryfoundation.org/
The IT Setup: The setup is similar to Skype, using a pc and webcam, although students take part as a group with the image projected on a whiteboard rather than as individuals in front of lots of pcs. Dedicated videoconferencing equipment is also compatible if available in the school. We will work with your IT department to ensure everything is set up and working prior to the event.
Booking a Place: This is a session dedicated to a particular college as part of an HE and Careers week. If you are interested in something similar for your students please contact us via email and we will discuss the request with our university partners.
