English Language/Literature: Skills & Insight – Approaches To Analysing Previously Unseen Texts With Dr Carole Sweeney & Dr Deirdre Osborne From Goldsmiths, University of London

27th January 2022 @ 10:30 - 11:30

In this English Language/Literature session, we are joined by two leading academics from Goldsmiths, University of London, Dr Carole Sweeney and Dr Deirdre Osborne. Carole and Deirdre will run an interactive skills and insight workshop for students on Approaches To Analysing Previously Unseen Texts.

The session will be evenly split between prose and poetry.

Summary from Dr Carole Sweeney

‘Reader, I married Him’: Gender, Power and Patriarchy. Reading two extracts from novels separated by over 100 years, you will be asked to do a close textual reading engaging with questions of girls’ and women’s freedom outside of marriage and the domestic space.

Summary from Dr Deirdre Osborne

‘The Family Face’. Two poems separated by a century (1917, 2017) offer us distinct ideas about how we know who we are and the ties that bind. We will consider what secrets are revealed across the generations and what gets passed on in unexpected ways that foregrounds mothers, race and inheritances.

The session will develop skills and approaches to support students in their English Language/Literature studies.
