Engineering: University Faculty Tour – Engineering With The University of Sheffield & University of East Anglia

30th June 2022 @ 16:15 - 17:15

Introduced by a member of faculty staff and supported by undergraduates in different locations, University of East Anglia and The University of Sheffield offer an insight into the teaching and learning environment within their Engineering faculty.

Each university has 30 minutes to showcase their amazing facilities whilst undergraduate students overlay their experiences of studying within the faculty. Please find details of the two universities’ respective tours below:

University of East Anglia – Tour Hosted by Dr Alexandros Askounis & Dr Salman Abdi Jalebi: In the last 3 years, the School of Engineering at UEA has expanded following a significant £7.4 million investment to develop Productivity East – a regional hub for engineering, technology and management. On this tour, we will introduce our new state of the art facilities and the expertise within the faculty by demonstrating how undergraduate students access them through lectures, tutorials and via exciting and diverse project work.

Starting in Mechanical and Manufacturing, we will describe how students – supported by fully qualified technicians – use the disciplines of materials, mechanics, structures, fluids and thermodynamics, to develop engineering solutions for real life problems.

We’ll then move on to the brand new Electrical and Electronics workshop where students get hands-on experience in designing and assembling small-scale automated solutions using Arduino and basic electronics skills.

Finally, we’ll look at the type of projects you can undertake as an engineering student at UEA. Projects can involve design, research, experimentation, computation and other activities. As part of Productivity East, wherever possible these projects are linked with industry partners, so you could find yourself working alongside your future employer to help discover practical solutions to current and future challenges.

The University of Sheffield – The Diamond building is a striking structure that is home to over 6,000 students from the Faculty of Engineering. Seven engineering departments and three interdisciplinary programmes use The Diamond and is home to the award winning Multidisciplinary Engineering Education team. There is a range of laboratories in The Diamond for students to take advantage of. These all feature industrially recognised equipment which provides students with the skills and knowledge employers are looking for in graduate engineers. One of our student ambassadors will tour you around the incredible Diamond building highlighting all the teaching facilities including the labs, lecture theatres, study zones and the cafe! You’ll learn more about our teaching style including the integration between practical and theoretical elements. We look forward to showing you everything engineering has to offer at the University of Sheffield.

The virtual tour is designed for student groups/individual students for whom this is a great way of furthering their HE research and making meaningful comparisons between universities.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.

As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.

Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) studying, or with a possible interest in studying, a degree in Engineering and related disciplines. Student groups, and individual students and teachers are very welcome to join us.

Preparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider questions they have about studying Engineering at university level.

The IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans (similar to Zoom) and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event.

Booking a Place: This is free for schools and colleges. If you would like to take part in this event, please register your interest using the link to the registration form below:
