In this Engineering/Physics session, Jez Turner, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Engineering at University of Nottingham, will run an interactive talk for students on Apollo, Artemis and Space Sustainability. Jez Turner will host an engaging online session for A-Level students, focused on one of the most important challenges facing the modern space industry: sustainability. As human activity in space grows rapidly, from satellite mega-constellations to ambitious Human exploration missions to the Moon, questions around space debris, responsible design, and long-term stewardship of the space environment have never been more critical.

In this interactive session, Jez will introduce students to the concepts shaping sustainable space engineering, drawing on real-world examples and current developments in the sector. Students will explore how engineers, scientists and policymakers are working to balance innovation with responsibility, and how today’s decisions will affect future generations.

The session is designed to be accessible, thought-provoking and inspiring, providing students with insight into emerging careers in space and engineering. There will also be opportunities for questions and discussion, making it an ideal event for curious minds considering STEM pathways and the future of space exploration.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. There is no charge to take part.

As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.

Suitable for: Aged 16+ pre-university students studying, or with a possible interest in studying, Physics, Engineering and STEM disciplines, more generally. Student groups as well as students and teachers joining individually are very welcome.

Preparation/Pre-Reading: Students are asked to watch the Headliner video in advance of the session and consider the points and questions introduced. Students can also think about questions about studying at university level.

The IT Setup: The event will be run on Zoom and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the speaker via typed comments and questions and/or via a microphone. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event.
