Engineering/Mathematics: The Grand Quest for Truth? How to Gain Insights with Mathematics with Dr Thilo Gross from The University of Bristol
25th February 2016 @ 11:00 - 12:00
This event is part of The University of Bristol’s virtual open day live from its Engineering Mathematics Department.
This interactive webinar/videoconference is for Year 12 and 13 students. Schools can take part in as many or as few of the webinar events during the day as they would like (See other events). Sponsored by Bristol, there is no costs to schools.
Bristol would also like to record this session with the possibility of including clips on their website. Please be aware of this when signing up.
Details of this session are as follows:
Dr Thilo Gross The grand quest for truth? How to gain insights with mathematics
Most scientists work in the real world – they do experiments or observe things (for example animals in the wild). But mathematicians can discover new insights just by working with a pencil and paper in an office. How is this possible? Is maths some kind of magic that produces knowledge out of thin air? Or is maths just a tool for discovering some insights that were already there, but were somehow hidden from the view of other researchers? More importantly is the question how is it actually done? How does the magic of mathematics work, and why? In this talk I will show some (very simple) tricks that we use when we study the world mathematically, and thus, I hope, a tiny bit of the magic of maths will be reve
Please do get in touch if you have a group that would like to take part. Availability will be limited to four schools.
