Engineering: General Engineering Vs An Engineering Specialism – How Do I Choose? With UEA & University of Nottingham

30th September 2020 @ 13:30 - 14:15

In this webinar, we will address the question many sixth form students interested in Engineering are contemplating, ‘Should I do a General Engineering course or should I specialise?’

We will be joined by Chris Atkin, Professor of Engineering and Head of Engineering at UEA and Luis Neves, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Engineering, University of Nottingham.

Chris Atkin will spend 20 minutes outlining the General Engineering undergraduate study offered at UEA, followed by Luis Neves who will then explore the opportunities in Specialist Engineering offered at Nottingham. Both whirlwind talks will distil the pros and cons of each type of study, focusing on the development of knowledge, skills, academic excellence, and progression towards a career, and will include some time for the audience to ask questions.

The session is designed to give students a real insight into how Engineering degree courses are structured and the diverse opportunities available within the field. It is a collaborative session between UEA and Nottingham and seeks to inform the individual choices prospective students are currently making.

The session will conclude with some final thoughts from each speaker.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.

Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students with a potential interest in studying Engineering at university.

Preparation or Pre-Reading: We recommend that students prepare in advance some questions relevant to their potential interest in studying Engineering.

The IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard.
