Election Year 2024: Is Democracy in Crisis? With Dr Martin Scott & Dr Ulrike Theuerkauf From University of East Anglia
June 24 @ 12:45 - 13:30
In this interactive session, we invite participants to discuss with us:
- different types of democracy
- signs of a global democratic recession since 2006
- the recent rise of far-right populism
- the role of the media in safeguarding or weakening democracy
- why some social scientists are becoming increasingly worried about the state of democracy in the UK
The session will be led by two academics from the School of Global Development at the University of East Anglia: Dr Martin Scott, Associate Professor in Media and Global Development; and Dr Ulrike Theuerkauf, Associate Professor in Politics and Global Development. Participants will be encouraged to contribute either via microphone or online chat throughout the session, as we will explore key concepts and theoretical arguments from the academic debate on democracy together.
There will be an opportunity for further Q&A at the end of the session.
