DESCRIPTION:Register here \n  \n \n  \n  \nIn this interactive session\, Elena will draw on her experience as a mathematician and mathematics educator to propose that the mathematics we learn in school – and how we learn it – influences our choice of profession and further studies. She will critique the limited vision of mathematics that is often offered in school and she will share examples of how mathematics is a deeply human activity that has developed in every culture and in every part of the world over time. She will then make the case that limited experiences of mathematics culture has a detrimental effect on who chooses to study mathematics and she will invite participants to imagine a decolonised\, inclusive version of the mathematics curriculum that challenges Eurocentric narratives about mathematics and embraces the contributions from often minoritized communities. \n  \nLecturer Profile (Please Click): Professor Elena Nardi \n\n  \nOur events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals\, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures. \nAs a live\, participative event\, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event\, where available. \n  \nSuitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) studying\, or with a possible interest in studying\, Education/Sociology\, Maths and related disciplines. Student groups as well as students and teachers joining individually are very welcome. \nPreparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider the topic in advance and questions they have. Students can also think about questions about studying Education/Sociology and Maths at university level. \nThe IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans (similar to Zoom) and participants will be able to join using laptops\, tablets\, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group\, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions.
