Economics: Skills & Insight – Focus on Understanding Current UK Economic Performance With Dr Martin Bruns From University of East Anglia

In this Economics session, Dr Martin Bruns, a leading academic from the School of Economics at University of East Anglia, will run an interactive skills and insight workshop for students on Understanding Current UK Economic Performance.

We are going to evaluate current UK economic performance based on four measures: aggregate prices, Pound-Dollar exchange rate, unemployment, and industrial production. For each of these series we are going to assess whether its current level can be explained mostly by short-term shocks, or whether it is in line with longer-term trends. Doing so will allow us to disentangle the potentially transitory effects of events like the Brexit vote, the beginning of Covid, or the start of the Ukraine war from slower-moving trends such as the fundamental effects of leaving the European Union, the changes to e.g., working culture in response to Covid, or geopolitical realignments.

The session will develop skills and approaches to support students in their Economics studies and future aspirations.
