Economics: insight4me Economics – Labour Markets With Professor Jo Blanden From University of Surrey & Dr Liliana Harding From University of East Anglia
1st December 2022 @ 09:00 - 10:00
- University of East Anglia: Dr Liliana Harding, Associate Professor in Economics in the School of Economics will consider the question of discrimination by exploring Power in Labour Markets. Understanding power and patriarchy helps analyse how economic institutions actually function and how women and minorities are at a disadvantage in the workplace. Liliana will also reflect on where we stand after the pandemic on one hand, and in terms of an inclusive approach in economics on the other hand.
- University of Surrey: Professor Jo Blanden from the University’s School of Economics will discuss an important dimension of fairness in society: social mobility. Social mobility is the extent to which people’s economic and social position in life differs from their parents’. Jo will describe how we measure social mobility in the context of labour markets, consider the reasons why the children of richer parents often do better than those from poorer backgrounds and ask what (if anything) Governments should do about it.
insight4me is a series of subject specific webinars for Year 12 & 13 students, and equivalent. The sessions directly support students’ current studies by giving an insight into particular curriculum areas whilst affording an understanding of how these subjects continue beyond A-levels, T-levels, IB, BTEC and equivalent qualifications, and how they vary between universities.
In this insight4me Economics online event for schools and colleges, University of East Anglia and University of Surrey will each have roughly 30 minutes to deliver a punchy, topic based ‘micro’ talk. Within an overall session theme of Labour Markets, the universities have the freedom to choose their own focus and use the time to convey the key points of the case studies for the students.
Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.
As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.
Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) studying, or with a possible interest in studying, Economics and related disciplines. Student groups, and individual students and teachers are very welcome to join us.
Preparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider the 2 topics and discuss some of the key elements in advance. Students can also think about questions they have about studying Economics at university level.
