Economics/Geography: Globalisation & Development Economics – Is Free Trade Necessary for Economic Growth? with Dr Sheheryar Banuri from University of East Anglia
February 2 @ 09:10 - 09:55
In this Economics/Geography session, Dr Sheheryar Banuri, Associate Professor in Economics in the School of Economics at University of East Anglia, will run an interactive talk for students on Globalisation & Development Economics – Is Free Trade Necessary for Economic Growth?
This session introduces students to the economics of globalisation and development through one of its most contested claims: that free trade is a necessary condition for economic growth.
Beginning with foundational trade theories, including comparative advantage and factor endowments, we explore why globalisation, through trade and capital flows, has been seen as a powerful engine of development. We then examine influential critiques, asking whether global markets are truly free or fair, whether trade systematically disadvantages poorer countries, and why many successful development experiences combined openness with state intervention, industrial policy, and selective protection.
Using historical examples and contemporary debates, the session offers a critical lens on globalisation, highlighting both its opportunities and its limits for economic development, inequality, and long-run growth.
