In this Economics/Business session, Dr James Watson, Associate Professor in Financial Economics in the School of Economics at UEA, will run an interactive talk for students on Cryptocurrencies.

Cryptocurrencies, and notably Bitcoin, have been around for a while. In fact, noting the pace of technological innovation, Bitcoin itself we must really now consider quite ‘old’. However, we typically aren’t using cryptocurrencies in our day-to-day lives, and don’t seem likely to any time soon. But in parallel, the Bitcoin price (at mid- May 2025) was about as high as it has ever been.

In this session, we will try to reconcile this contradiction, by considering reasons why Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies remain popular (and therefore valuable) despite the lack of obvious widespread use cases.
