Degree Apprenticeships with Rob Gill and Amanda Murphy from Jaguar Land Rover
11th October 2016 @ 15:15 - 16:15
Jaguar Land Rover is delighted to be able to talk to Year 13 students about their Degree Apprenticeship Scheme in these live interactive webinars. The sessions coincide with JLR’s application window which runs to the end of December for the September 2017 intake.
Become an Apprentice at Jaguar Land Rover and you’ll learn from the best. You’ll work on projects that have a real impact on the company’s global success. You’ll also be rewarded as you develop your skills and start on the road to building an impressive career. The Degree Scheme runs for six years and is split into two business areas: Engineering and Commercial (Finance).
About the Schemes
As an Engineering Degree Apprentice, you’ll combine institution-based learning with hands-on experience gained at one of JLR’s manufacturing plants or vehicle workshops. You’ll spend the majority of your first year at college, learning the fundamentals of engineering. Outside of term time, you’ll complement your studies working at your allocated facility. During your second year with JLR, you’ll continue to work within an expert team whilst you further your qualifications at college two days a week. In later years, you’ll attend the prestigious University of Warwick on a block-release basis to study for a full engineering degree. Apprentices work towards a fully sponsored BEng degree in Applied Engineering from The University of Warwick.
To join the Engineering Degree Apprenticeship Scheme you’ll need Maths (higher paper) and English Language GCSE C Grade or above (Grade 4-9) or an academic equivalent.
In addition, you will need three GCSEs (or equivalent) including a Natural Science, Engineering or Technology related subject at C Grade or above, or as an alternative, Engineering vocational qualification Level 3 of 90 credit value (540 GLH).
Also, you’ll need one of the following two:
- Two A Levels to include Maths and an additional Mathematical/Physics/Chemistry/Technology or Engineering subject at C Grade or above
- Or A Level Maths at C Grade or above plus an Engineering Level 3 qualification of 120 credit value (720 GLH)
As a Commercial Degree Apprentice, similarly you’ll combine institution-based learning with professional experience gained at JLR’s world-class facilities. Throughout the programme you’ll attend the BPP University College of Professional Studies in Birmingham on a day release basis, completing a series of courses and exams fully paid for by Jaguar Land Rover. In the first 18 months you’ll study towards the CIMA Certificate Level qualification, before completing a further 9 exams to become a fully qualified CIMA Chartered Accountant. You’ll also have the chance to undertake a top-up degree, gaining you a BSc in Professional Accounting.
For those interested in entering the world of Finance, the entry requirements differ slightly. You’ll need 280 UCAS points gained from 3 A-Levels, one of which must be a grade B in a numerical or business related subject (Maths, Physics, Economics, Business Studies, Accounting, etc.). Applications from those without A-levels will ideally have a 180 credit level 3 extended diploma in a relevant Business discipline (graded D/M/M). In addition, you’ll also need 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including Maths and English Language, or equivalent.
Session Format: JLR will use these sessions to introduce the programme and to answer questions in a relaxed and informal way. Each session will typically involve three or four schools/colleges and would be led by current JLR apprentices talking about their career path and experiences. They are fully interactive so your students would be able to ask questions and share their own thoughts.
Suitable for: Schools & Colleges nationally
The sessions would be relevant for Year 13 students with a STEM or Business/Finance leaning. JLR has also asked if each school/college taking part can aim to have a minimum of 10 students participating. The maximum depends on the room and technology you are using. If you have lower numbers, Year 12s would also be welcome. Parents would be very welcome if you feel this is appropriate and have the space.
Preparation/Pre-reading: Details of the Degree Apprenticeship Scheme will be made available to students in advance of the session. It will be helpful for students to consider questions in advance.
The IT Setup: The setup is similar to Skype, using a pc and webcam, although students take part as a group with the image projected on a whiteboard rather than as individuals in front of lots of pcs. We will work with your IT department to ensure everything is set up and working prior to the event. If you have dedicated videoconferencing equipment, that is perfectly compatible too. The sessions are generally limited to 3 or 4 schools to maintain the interactive nature of the experience.
Booking a Place: If you have a group that you would like to take part in this event, please contact us via email, letting us know which session you are interested in. We will book your place subject to availability.
