In September 2022, someone tweeted that Google’s facial recognition software thought his face was a bowl of lentils. Whilst this went viral as a funny example, local police forces and government are trialling facial recognition in public places without our knowing. This tech uses artificial intelligence (AI) which has been shown to exhibit racist and sexist biases that may lead to unfair or dangerous decisions. Data Scientists are at the cutting edge of innovations that solve social problems, tackling COVID-19 and designing virtual realities, but should those who make and use these technologies consider how they affect people and the social problems they may also cause?

This session will ask some serious questions about how AI and Data Science can change our lives, society and politics. This includes what grades we get in our A levels, what we see on social media, what we think and how people vote for our leaders. It will show how Data Science should and can do better for society.
