In this Creative Writing session, Dr Philip Langeskov, Associate Professor in Creative Writing in the School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing at University of East Anglia, will run an interactive skills and insight workshop for students on Creative Writing.

This session begins with the belief that we are all – every one of us – storytellers. We tell stories every day – to our friends, to our families, to people that we are meeting for the very first time. We tell stories about who we are, where we come from; about our hopes and fears; about our memories of the past and about our dreams for the future. In doing so, we find ways to articulate ‘our own way of being in the world’, to borrow a phrase from Zadie Smith. Thought about in this way, storytelling becomes not only a straightforward aspect of being a human being but also a thrillingly diverse and endless activity.

Designed to give you an insight into what the study of Creative Writing at university is like, the session is also intended to help you unlock the stories you carry inside, whether you know it or not, even if you’ve never actually written a story in your life – and even if you don’t intend to go onto study Creative Writing. In the course of the session we will do a number of things. We will look at some things (in particular, a painting); we will read some things (in particular, a poem); we will think some things (to be discovered), and we will write some things (in particular, the beginnings of a story). You will have the opportunity to share your thoughts and your writing, if you feel so inclined, and to ask any questions you may have about writing and university life. You don’t need to read anything in advance and you only need to bring something to write with. I’m very much looking forward to it and hope that you are too.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.

As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.

Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) studying, or with a possible interest in studying, Creative Writing and related disciplines.

Preparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider the topic in advance, with respect to challenges they may face or questions they have. Students can also think about questions they have about studying Creative Writing at university level.

The IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans (similar to Zoom) and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices.
