In this live interactive Creative Writing workshop, we will be joined by Dr Gavin Goodwin, Lecturer in English and Creative Writing in the Department of English & Creative Writing at Aberystwyth University, who will present Beyond Language? How to Write About Music.

Music plays an important role in our lives. We turn to it to dance and celebrate, but also to grieve and reflect. It can be a communal experience or something we seek refuge in when feeling alone. Yet the sound of music, how it affects us and what it means to us, is often difficult to describe.

This webinar explores different ways of writing about music. Looking at examples from fiction, nonfiction and poetry, it will analyse how a variety of authors have attempted to give voice to that which seems beyond language. Some do this by exploring its cultural context; others portray the effects music has on our psychology; still others try to describe sound itself. The session will include writing exercises based on these different techniques and approaches.
