Creative Writing: A Skills & Insight Workshop With KR Moorhead From University of East Anglia

21st April 2021 @ 16:15 - 17:15

In this workshop, KR Moorhead from UEA’s School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing will lead a skills and insight workshop for students of creative writing, exploring techniques and approaches.

How do writers shape their initial ideas into stories? This interactive session will work with writing prompts from UEA’s Creative Writing degree courses and explore how to develop narratives beginning with a discussion about your responses to the Journeys activity outlined in Preparation/Pre-Reading below.

Using point of view and other building blocks of constructing stories, the session will help unlock ways of transforming your ideas into fictional shape.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.

As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.

Speaker Profile (Please click): KR Moorhead

Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) studying, or with a possible interest in studying, Creative Writing, English and related disciplines.

Preparation/Pre-Reading: Please prepare a short response to the following Journeys creative writing activity below. You can pre-submit your responses using this link which will give KR time to review your writing in advance (Don’t forget, you will still need to register ….. See Booking a Place at the bottom of this page):

As well as visual and written prompts, we sometimes use combinations as the starting point for pieces of writing. Here, you have a selection of types of transport (on the left) and then a selection of kinds of journey (on the right). In a workshop we might pass around an envelope and ask students to take, unseen, a slip of paper with a type of transport written on it, then select, again unseen, a slip of paper with a kind of journey. The task is then to write a short piece about your selected journey using the form of transport you’ve selected. For now, you can simply choose one from each list, or you might like to do so randomly, and write something depending on the combination. Happy travels!

Students may also wish to consider questions they have about studying Creative Writing and, more specifically, issues they may face with their written pieces.

The IT Setup:
The event will be run on Bluejeans and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event.

Booking a Place: This is free for schools and colleges. If you would like to take part in this event, please register your interest using the link to the registration form below:
