DESCRIPTION:Register Here\n  \n \n  \nWorld-wide we are facing a climate crisis. This emergency means that we need to change the way we prioritize what we teach and learn to become better informed citizens. Information will give us the tools to put pressure on our politicians and other powerful decision makers to make the right decisions. How do we go about making decisions about what is important to teach and learn? Can we overcome\, to some extent at least\, the dissonance between what we are expected to teach and learn and what we would need to know more about? \nIn this session\, we’ll be looking at how a change of perspective can make a huge difference in covering a topic in the context of language teaching. From concrete examples\, such as one linked to the Tarahumara indigenous peoples in Chihuaha\, Mexico\, we will be able to see the impact that teaching and learning can make to contribute to a more fair world. \nClimate crisis also means a crisis of justice. Those who are less responsible for the crisis we are in are often experiencing more dramatically the devastating consequences of an increasingly more virulent climate. They will also be least able to cope with the anticipated negative impact to their social\, economic and natural systems. \nWorking towards resolving this crisis is a way to work for justice\, but to resolve a crisis we need first to know more about it. COP26 is the name of the UN Climate Change Conference taking place in Glasgow from 31 October – 12 November 2021. \nFor further details about this great series and to see other COP26 events on offer from UEA\, please click below: \nCOP26 Series with UEA \n\n\nOur events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom\, or students and teachers can take part as individuals\, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures. \nAs a live\, participative event\, this session will not be recorded but access to slides and other relevant resources will be given\, where possible. \nSuitable for: Key Stage 4 & Key Stage 5 students studying or with an interest in studying Languages\, Linguiustics\, Geography\, Citizenship\, International Development\, and related subjects. Teachers and members of school staff\, as always\, are welcome too and participants can join as individuals from school/college or home\, or as a group from school/college. \nPreparation/Pre-Reading: Students are asked to consider some of the key issues and any questions they might like to ask during the session. \n\nThe IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans and participants will be able to join using laptops\, tablets\, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group\, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions.
