SUMMARY:Chemistry: Using Light as a Ruler in DNA and 'Why Study Chemistry At University?' - A Taster Lecture\, Options And Careers With Dr Tim Craggs and Students from The University Of Sheffield
DESCRIPTION: \n  \nIn this hour we will give you a 20 minute introduction to Chemistry at Sheffield\, which courses we have to offer\, and how we inspire both young scientists and Nobel Prize winners with our groundbreaking research and innovative teaching. \nWithin this part of the session\, there is an opportunity to ask questions of some of our current staff and students. \nThis session then moves on to a taster lecture given by Dr. Tim Craggs\, who will discuss how the chemistry we teach has a place in his research on the structure and function of DNA. In particular Tim will focus on the use of light as a ruler in DNA. \n  \nSuitable for: This lecture would be appropriate for Year 12 and Year 13 students studying\, or thinking about studying\, Chemistry. \nPreparation or Pre-Reading: None is required although students might like to consider questions they have about studying Chemistry at university. \nThe IT Setup: The setup is similar to Skype\, using a pc and webcam\, although students take part as a group with the image projected on a whiteboard rather than as individuals in front of lots of pcs. Dedicated videoconferencing equipment is also compatible if available to the school. We will work with your IT department to ensure everything is set up and working prior to the event. The sessions are generally limited to 3 or 4 schools to maintain the interactive nature of the experience. \nBooking a Place: If you have a group of students that you would like to take part in this event\, please contact us via email or via the contact form at the top right of this webpage. Subject to availability we will book a place for you. \n
