SUMMARY:Chemistry: What Can We Use Nanotechnology For? From Diagnosis To Treatment With Dr Maria J. Marin From University of East Anglia
DESCRIPTION:Register here \n  \n \n  \nNanoparticles are particles with at least one dimension less than 100 nanometre. But\, what is a nanometre? A nanometre is one billionth of a metre. It is difficult to imagine just how small that is\, and it may be hard to imagine how things that are so small can be so useful. \nIt turns out very interesting things occur at the nanoscale and nanomaterials exhibit novel characteristics (physical and chemical properties) compared to the same materials at the metre scale. We are used to seeing yellow gold\, however\, when we move to the nanoscale\, gold nanoparticles appear red in colour. \nCarbon\, which is quite soft in its normal form\, becomes incredibly hard at the nanoscale. What else changes at the nanoscale? Why is nanotechnology important? \nDr Marín’s talk provides a general overview on nanoparticles and an insight into what nanotechnology is useful for – from their applications in therapeutics – as drug delivery systems and in the development of vaccines – to their use in diagnostics – such as in lateral flow devices. Dr Marín will provide examples of nanotechnology-based research performed in her laboratory at the University of East Anglia. \nLecturer Profile (Please Click): Dr Maria J. Marin \n\n  \nOur events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals\, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures. \nAs a live\, participative event\, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event\, where available. \n  \nSuitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) studying\, or with a possible interest in studying\, Chemistry and related disciplines. \nPreparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider the topic in advance and questions they have. Students can also think about questions about studying Chemistry at university level. \nThe IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans (similar to Zoom) and participants will be able to join using laptops\, tablets\, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group\, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions.
