SUMMARY:Chemistry: The Chemistry of Colour by Natalie Paul\, The University of Sheffield
DESCRIPTION:The session is aimed at students that are interested in science\, and particularly those studying Chemistry at AS/A2 level. The session will cover how electrons fill in atomic oribitals from AS and transition metal chemistry from A2. Natalie will build upon these areas to explain molecular bonding and hence explain why transition metal chemistry is so colourful compared to most organic chemistry (although not all as we will see!) \nThe session will also cover the practical uses of colour\, and will link back to some very basic GCSE chemistry that may have been previously overlooked! \nThis lecture is aimed at giving students a wider university perspective and understanding of the A-level syllabus and a taste of university teaching. There will be a chance to discuss certain topics and students will be engaged in questions and activities throughout the talk. There will be handouts and PowerPoint slides are available to all participating schools. \nSuitable for: Year 12/Year 13 \nPreparation/Pre-reading: There is no specific preparation or pre-reading required. However it would be helpful for students to consider questions in advance relating to studying this subject at university. These questions may cover\, for example\, the application process\, course structure\, and university lifestyle. \n
