Chemistry: Analysing Data – Skills & Insight Workshop With Dr James Wright From University of Surrey
December 9 @ 13:35 - 14:20
In this Chemistry session, we will be joined by Dr James Wright, Lecturer in Physical, Analytical and Inorganic Chemistry in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at University of Surrey, who will run an interactive skills and insight workshop for students on Analysing Data.
This session will cover how to interpret the data obtained from chemical experiments, including:
- How to present experimental data and interpret data
- Understanding correlation vs causation
- Determining whether a relationship between experimental variables is significant or not
- Using all the above to propose new experiments – a vital Chemistry skill
The session will be interactive; you/your class will be asked to respond to data presented and think critically. Whilst supporting your current studies, the session content will be related to the content of degrees in Chemistry and allied sciences, for a taster of what is to come at university.
Lecturer Profile: Dr James Wright
Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom, or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. There is no charge to take part.
As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides will be shared, where available.
Suitable for: Aged 16+ pre-university students studying, or with a possible interest in studying, Chemistry. This session will also be of particular interest to those engaged in a research project (e.g. EPQ) as part of their qualification, and/or those studying allied science to Chemistry as well. Student groups as well as students and teachers joining individually are very welcome.
Preparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider the topic and discuss some of the key elements in advance. Students can also think about questions they have about studying at university level.
The IT Setup: The event will be run on Zoom and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting onto a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event.
Booking a Place: This is free for schools and colleges. If you would like to take part in this event, please register your interest using the link to the registration form below:
