Business & Management: Developing Strategic Thinking Within Organisations – A Next PLC Case Study With Dr Akash Puranik From Solent University
22nd May 2023 @ 11:10 - 11:55
In this Business & Management session, Dr Akash Puranik, Senior Lecturer in Business and Management in the Faculty of Business, Law and Digital Technologies at Solent University, will run an interactive talk for students on Developing Strategic Thinking Within Organisations – A Next plc Case Study.
This session will offer participants a chance to practise their analytical skills, whilst also offering some insight into the application of some management tools. Under Preparation/Pre-Reading below, you will be able to access a case study of Next plc, a well-known FTSE100 organisation, in which you will be allocated a task prior to the session, requiring about half an hour of work beforehand.
Please ensure to complete this beforehand as this will allow fruitful discussions in the limited time. The actual session will focus on using typical management tools but applying them with a strategic mindset for generating interesting insights/ideas for future action.
We will discuss these ideas and transform information that you have already gathered. You will develop various skills that can be used in everyday business situations.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.
As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.
Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) studying, or with a possible interest in studying, Business and Management, and related disciplines. Student groups as well as students and teachers joining individually are very welcome.
Preparation/Pre-Reading: Students are asked to click this Next plc Case Study and complete the task outlined within it. It is anticipated that you will need half an hour to complete this in advance of the session and the results will then become the starting point for the live activity on 22nd May. Students can also think about questions about studying Business and Management at university level.
The IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans (similar to Zoom) and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event.
Booking a Place: This is free for schools and colleges. If you would like to take part in this event, please register your interest using the link to the registration form below:
