Business & Economics: Implications of Brexit for the UK Financial Sector with Dr Simone Varotto from Henley Business School, The University of Reading

In this interactive webinar, Dr Simone Varotto asks your students to consider the implications of Brexit for the UK Financial Sector.
Before the event, student groups taking part are asked to prepare a 5 minute presentation having discussed and explored the following scenario:
You are the CEO of a large bank with operations in the UK. After reviewing the YouTube videos below and the article “Financial institutions weigh their options after Brexit” (to be sent to participating schools):
– Which actions would you take to address the possible consequences of Brexit?
– Would you consider drastically reducing your presence in the UK?

Each school should prepare a 5 minute PowerPoint presentation on the above topic to be delivered during the workshop. Schools will be able to see and hear the presentations from the other schools/colleges taking part.
Format of the session:
1. 12:30 – 12:40 Introduction, including overview of Finance degrees at UoR
2. 12:40 – 13:20 School presentations, followed by Q&A
3. 13:20 – 13:30 Concluding remarks
Benefits: Students will have an opportunity to focus on important issues currently facing the British economy at large and the UK banking sector. Students will also develop an appreciation of the topics that are covered in finance degrees at Henley Business School, The University of Reading.
About Dr Simone Varotto: Simone holds a PhD in Financial Economics from Birkbeck College, London. Between 1996 and 2000, he was a member of the research staff of the Bank of England where he worked on credit risk modelling and Basel II. Soon afterward he joined the ICMA Centre at Henley Business School, University of Reading as a lecturer. Simone teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses in risk management, credit risk and mergers and acquisitions and has an active research interest in credit risk, liquidity risk and financial regulation. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the European Financial Management Association.
Suitable for: Year 12 and 13 students studying and/or interested in studying Finance, Business, Economics and Management.
Preparation or Pre-Reading: See required preparation described above. If your group would like for a PowerPoint to be shown as part of their presentation, please email this by 17.00 on 12th October.
The IT Setup: The setup is similar to Skype, using a pc and webcam, although students take part as a group with the image projected on a whiteboard rather than as individuals in front of lots of pcs. Dedicated videoconferencing equipment is also compatible if available to the school. We will work with your IT department to ensure everything is set up and working prior to the event. The sessions are generally limited to 3 or 4 schools to maintain the interactive nature of the experience.
