Business and Finance: The Business and Finance Challenge – Have You Got What It Takes To Make The Decision?! Led by Associate Professor Elaine Darby From Henley Business School

June 17 @ 11:15 - 12:15

The Business Challenge is a connected fun and educational activity devised and hosted by highly experienced and enthusiastic professionals from Henley Business School at the University of Reading. The activity is specifically designed to excite Year 10 students about the business world and to facilitate the development of commercial awareness and professional skills.

The Business Challenge comprises two sessions which will run in consecutive weeks:

Session 1: 17 June, 11.15-12.15 – If you had £100,000 to invest in a corporate organisation, how would you decide which company to choose? In this session we will introduce the team, the activity, and the tools and techniques you will need to successfully tackle the challenge.

Session 2: 24 June, 11.15-12.15 – Have you got what it takes to make the decision? In this session each school group will present and reflect on their findings and decision.

By joining the team at Henley for this fun activity, which is free for schools and colleges, it is expected that your students will:

  • Develop commercial awareness – which is essential for anyone considering further business related studies and invaluable in the workplace.
  • Develop research skills – which are crucial both in further / higher education and in the workplace.
  • Develop a range of professional skills including confidence, teamwork, presentation and communication skills – all of which are critical life skills.
  • Engage in friendly competition with students from other schools / colleges who may come from diverse backgrounds and have different perspectives.

Suitable for: Year 10 students.

Preparation or Pre-Reading: There is no preparation required for the first sessions. Students will be guided by the team at Henley so that they are clear about the research and presentation required for the second session. Please make participating students aware that it is interactive and they will have the chance to ask and respond to questions and, in the final session, present their ideas.

The IT Setup: The setup is similar to Skype, using a pc and webcam, although students take part as a group with the image projected on a whiteboard rather than as individuals in front of lots of pcs. Dedicated videoconferencing equipment is also compatible if available to the school. Further details are here: Connecting in to a Channel Talent Event (Please Click)

We will work with your IT department to ensure everything is set up and working prior to the event. The sessions are generally limited to 3 to 5 schools to maintain the interactive nature of the experience. In this event there will be three groups of schools taking part increasing the opportunity to participate.

Booking a Place: This is free for schools and colleges. If you have a group of students that you would like to take part in this event, please click here

Subject to availability we will book a place for you.
