Biomedicine: Day In The Life Of A Medical Research Scientist With Dr Janine Wilkinson From University of East Anglia

May 4 @ 15:35 - 16:20

In this session, Dr Janine Wilkinson, Lecturer in Biomedicine in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of East Anglia, will discuss the type of work a medical research scientist will carry out, the diseases they will study, and the techniques they will employ on a day-to-day basis as part of their research role.

Students will gain an invaluable insight into what a laboratory is like to work in and the importance of the ground-breaking work that is being performed by medical research scientists.

Janine will also talk about the importance of publishing papers and why scientists spend a substantial proportion of their time writing, providing examples of papers and how they go towards building our knowledge of a disease and how this progresses therapies.

Please see Preparation/Pre-Reading below which includes a suggestion for preparing for and making the most of the session.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.

As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.

Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) potentially interested in studying Biomedicine at university and/or Biosciences more generally. Teachers and members of school staff, as always, are welcome too and participants can join as individuals from school/college or home, or as a group from school/college.

Preparation/Pre-Reading: Please could students spend some time before the session thinking about what a medical research scientist does using this SHEET. For the session, it would be great if students could have this in front of them with their ideas/questions on it. These could then be added to during the session. Students might also like to consider questions related to studying Biomedicine/Biosciences at university.

The IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event.

Booking a Place: This is free for schools and colleges. If you would like to take part in this event, please register your interest using the link to the registration form below:
