Biology/Biochemistry: The Dynamic Cell by Becky Brooks, The University of Bristol
6th December 2013 @ 11:20 - 12:20
This session will provide a general introduction to the idea of the “Dynamic Cell”. Cells aren’t just static bags of fluid, but are very dynamic and complex – the intracellular processes going on are fascinating. One such process is how cells migrate and move around, and the machinery they use to do this. Not only is this interesting to look at, but understanding cell migration is important for learning how we might treat complex diseases such as cancer.
This talk will be structured around some basic cell biology, but will also introduce some examples of where this goes wrong and what we can learn from this.
No prior knowledge of intracellular cell biology is required as Becky will explain this. Learning will mainly be visual, with lots of images and movies.
Suitable for: Year 12
Preparation/Pre-reading: There is no specific preparation or pre-reading required. However it would be helpful for students to consider questions in advance relating to studying this subject at university. These questions may cover, for example, the application process, course structure, and university lifestyle.
